What should I feed my cat?

Cats are obligate carnivores so they do need meat. You can choose to give a home made diet of meat such as chicken or fish etc but do be careful not to include too much liver as this can cause problems. Also you must make sure it is nutritionally complete, perhaps by adding supplements such as vitamin tablets (consult your vet) Alternatively there is a huge choice of ready prepared foods. Dry foods tend to keep fresh longer and can be left out for the cat to eat all day so are very convenient. However cats need access to plenty of fresh water if dry foods are used and they may have a tendency to eat too much and become plump! Tinned or foil wrapped "wet" foods are pleasant for the cat and have a higher water content (but always provide water). However they do not keep so well and become smelly especially in warm weather.
